Louisiana has the tallest capitol building in the United States! And a beautiful building it is! When you visit Baton Rouge, be sure to take the elevator to the observatory deck at the top. From there you see a beautiful city and the mighty Mississippi River.
The Old State Capitol
This fine old building was at one time considered by some to be an "ugly old castle." But today, it is cherished for its eccentricities. Some of the fine interior features are the spiral staircase and the glass dome.
The Governor's Mansion
The Governor's Mansion is a very beautiful home. It is built in the Southern colonial style.
The Old Spanish Arsenal
The Old Arsenal stored munitions during the Civil War.
The Cannons
Two old cannons sit atop an indian mound as if ready to protect the city from enemies. In 1779, the Battle of Baton Rouge was fought. It was the only Revolutionary War fought outside the original thirteen colonies.
The Pentagon Barracks
These beautiful old buildings houses troops during the Civil War and then later were on the first campus of Louisiana State University.
The Old Governor's Mansion
The first occupant of the old mansion was Huey P. Long. It now houses a museum.
The Mississippi River Bridge
From Baton Rouge, the bridge is the gateway to the West.
Sunset on the River
The Mighty Mississippi River! Note the bridge on the left. As one of the busiest ports in the United States, Baton Rouge sees lots of river traffic like the barges seen above.
